Dodge . Replacing Rear Disk Brake PadsReplacing brake pads can be expensive if you take your vehicle to a mechanic. However, with parts available at the local automotive store, and the right tools, you can replace your vehicle's rear disc brake pads less expensively in a single afternoon, or less as you become more experienced. Purchase the disc brake pads, rent a caliper piston compressing tool if needed, and then roll up your sleeves and get to work. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Brake pads 2 cement blocks Jack 2 jack stands Torque wrench Ratchet set Wrenches Flat-head screwdriver Caliper piston compressing tool Step by Step : 1 Place blocks in front of the front tires, which will remain on the ground, to prevent the car from rolling. 2 Jack up the rear end of the car and support each side with jack stands. 3 Remove the lug nuts on the tires and pull the tires from the vehicle. At this point, you should be able to see the caliper and rotor assembly. 4 Remove the calipers by removing the bolts. You may need to loosen the caliper by inserting a screwdriver between the brake pad and rotor to compress the piston. Remove one caliper at a time to prevent problems. This will allow you to see the remaining caliper should you forget how to reassemble. 5 Remove the brake pads. Depending on your vehicle, the brake pads may either be sitting in the caliper bracket or connected to the caliper with clips. If pads are clipped to the caliper remove the pads. Do not use a C-clamp to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper if your caliper is also a parking brake. You will need a special tool that screws the piston back into the caliper housing. You can rent one of these at your local parts store. Compress the piston into the caliper and set the caliper on the rotor. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose. 6 Install the brake pads into the caliper bracket or caliper, depending on your vehicle. 7 Place the caliper over the pads and rotor and replace the bolts. Tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's specifications. 8 Replace the tires and lug nuts and then lower the vehicle to the ground. 9 Torque the lug nuts to prevent rotor warping. Step by Step : 10 Pump the brakes before driving to seat the brake pads to the rotor. If the brake pedal does not feel right after three or four pumps, remove the tires and recheck the brakes. Step by Step : 11 Test-drive the vehicle. The brakes may feel a little soft for the first few trips until the brake pads seat properly. Tips & Warnings If you plan to resurface or replace the rotors, do so between steps 5 and 6. Remove the caliper bracket, but only if it is required for removal of the rotor. The caliper bracket is usually held on by two bolts. Remove the bolts and then the caliper bracket. To remove the rotor, slide it off; it usually comes off quite easily. If it is rusted, you may need to hit the rotor with a hammer between the lug studs to break it loose. Be careful not to hit a lug stud or it may be damaged. Measure the rotor for resurfacing or discard it and replace with a new one. Most local parts stores will measure and resurface rotors if you do not have a resurfacing machine. Install the new or resurfaced rotor and bolt on the caliper bracket. Tighten the bolts to manufacturer's specifications.
Dodge . How to Replace the Rear Brake Pads on a MaximaDepending on where you go, the cost of replacing the rear brake pads on a Nissan Maxima can be quite expensive. However, the cost of buying and replacing these items yourself can be much cheaper in comparison. Because most local auto supply stores carry the items needed, you can replace brake pads yourself in a single afternoon. Just roll up your sleeves, grab your tools and get to work. I've found that both the chief executive and the PR department often send the matter back to the regional office for action, so I'd rather have the president's or CEO's initials on the letter when it shows up at regional headquarters again. 6. If you still "can't get no satisfaction" or you have problems with an independent shop that refuses to settle the matter properly, write to your local Better Business Bureau, your local Bureau of Automotive Consumer Affairs (if there is one), and your state's Consumer Protection Agency. These organizations may suggest taking the matter to a mediation ser vice, or they may apply pressure of their own. Some states have special bureaus dedicated solely to handling auto repair disputes. 7.
